100 days until the British Triathlon Superseries Sunderland Grand Final

To mark the milestone with 100 days to go until Sunderland hosts the British Triathlon Superseries Finals, details on how to participate, volunteer and watch the race during the weekend of swimming, cycling and running have been revealed.

This year’s British Triathlon Superseries Finals will take place over the weekend of 20-21 August 2022 and will bring together youth and junior, senior and Paratri British Triathlon Superseries athletes in an action-packed weekend game.

There will be something for everyone throughout the event weekend, whether it’s completing their own swimming, cycling, running, volunteering at an event or watching a race on the Sunderland Rock route.

In addition to the British Triathlon Super Series, International Regional Championships and British Age Group Qualifiers, there will also be opportunities for family and adult runners as they will be able to race two different distances.

Entries for the family and adult events are now open, families will be able to participate side by side during the 50m swim and 1km run, while the Big Swim Bike Run (adults) will include a 100m swim and 6km bike, 2km run.

Speaking about Sunderland’s participation opportunities, which are part of the city’s wider swimming, cycling, running programme, Helen Marney, UK Triathlon Development Director, said:

“It’s a very exciting time for swimming, cycling and running, with the finals at Sunderland and the British Triathlon Superseries providing a fantastic opportunity to not only watch some of the UK’s best Ironman Three talents, can also participate in swimming, cycling, running including with family and friends.

“Family and Adult Activities are our new offerings and are perfect for anyone looking to take part in swimming, cycling, running for the first time or wanting to challenge themselves. Family Activities are a great opportunity for families to swim, run and , so they can do something positive and fun together while making memories in a pleasant and non-competitive environment.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to seize this opportunity to experience the fun and benefits of swimming, cycling, running and the many opportunities that come through our partnership with Sunderland City Council and beyond over an event weekend We are very excited to work with local organisations.”

An integral part of the UK Triathlon Performance Pathway, the UK Triathlon Super Series provides a range of national events and athlete development opportunities for the UK’s best Pathway athletes.

The Superseries Finals, one of three events in the 2022 British Triathlon, is recruiting volunteers to support the event.

There is a range of volunteer roles to choose from – including supporting registration and transitions, marshalling routes while athletes compete and operating assistance stations – all of which provide great opportunities to get involved and contribute to the success of the event.

Throughout the weekend, spectators will be able to see a number of exciting attractions along Roker’s race route, including the start and finish of the Marine Walk, swimming in the sea around Roker Beach, through Roker Park and along the waterfront and past the marina.

The event is part of a wider partnership between Triathlon UK and Sunderland City Council to increase opportunities for swimming, cycling and running in the city, with Sunderland also earmarked to host the World Triathlon in 2023 Championship Series.

Councillor Graeme Miller, Chairman of Sunderland City Council, said: “The British Triathlon Superseries Finals is coming to Sunderland and we are on the verge of an exciting 100-day countdown.

“The great thing about this event is that it gives everyone the opportunity to get involved and get involved in a major sporting event while having a great day.

“I hope many families will take this opportunity to complete their own swim, bike, run challenges at the event and get involved in our wider Active Sunderland Swim, Bike, Run campaign.

“The British Triathlon Superseries Final is one of many sporting events taking place in our city this summer. We hope events such as the Sunderland City Run, the Tour and the UK Tour in September will inspire more people to get started Swim, cycle and run for all the physical and mental health benefits of physical activity.”
