– Gold Star athlete and Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Chris Abner will raise the American flag during the running portion of the triathlon in memory of a lost friend

Tulsa, Oklahoma. (May 17, 2022) /endurance SPORTSWIRE/ – Fallen U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Jeremy Burris will be remembered as his family honored at the 2022 Certified Piedmontese Beef IRONMAN® Tulsa Triathlon as part of a triathlon® Foundation Gold Star Project.Through the Gold Star program, athletes serving in the U.S. military are selected to carry the American flag in the running portion of the full-distance IRONMAN or half-distance IRONMAN 70.3® Triathlon, honoring a fallen American soldier and gifting it to the Gold Star family (the family of an American soldier killed in battle).

Sergeant Chris Abner will be participating in the IRONMAN Triathlon on Sunday, May 22, 2022, on behalf of the IRONMAN Foundation Gold Star Program. Abner served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2002 to 2016 as the Chief of the Marine Corps Infantry Unit. He will raise the American flag during the running portion of the race in memory of his friend Lance Corporal Jeremy Burris, who was killed on October 8, 2007 while conducting combat operations in Qaim, Iraq. Abner was with Burris when he was killed. Burris was 22 when he died.

In addition to carrying the American flag in honor of Lance Corporal Burris, Abner will also present the flag to Lance Corporal Burris’ parents at the finish line.

“This is a special and meaningful program for us because not only can we support our racial community, but we can play a role in the recovery process for families who have lost loved ones while on active duty in our country,” said IRONMAN Foundation Executive Director Audra Tassone-Indeck said.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to my dear friend Colonel Jeremy Burris through the Gold Star Initiative program. This journey, through my training and race preparation, has not only been for me, but for everyone who served with Jeremy Individuals have made a huge difference,” Sergeant Chris Abner said.

Lance Corporal Jeremy Burris Medals include the Purple Heart, Combat Operations Medal, Defense Service and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Navy Sea Service Deployment Medal. Sergeant Abner’s medals include the Purple Heart, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (3) and the Good Conduct Medal (3), the Iraq Campaign Medal (4 stars), the Sea Service Deployment Medal (4), Presidential Unit Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal.

In addition to the Gold Star Program, which continues its Race For Change™ program in Tulsa, the IRONMAN Foundation will distribute more than $50,000 in charitable giving back to nonprofit programs and groups in the greater Tulsa area. This allocation includes $5,000 to provide swimming lessons to local youth at the YMCA of Greater Tulsa. Last year, the IRONMAN Foundation’s Race For Change™ initiative launched in Tulsa in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Tulsa and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Tulsa to address barriers that may prevent black athletes and other diverse groups from participating in triathlons .
