Chaos Emeralds Twist Sonic 2 Makes Big Sequel Changes

Sonic 2 quickly got rid of Chaos Emeralds in a major makeover that made a big difference when it came to dealing with GUN and Shadow the Hedgehog for Sonic 3.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The most important Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings Master Emerald and the seven Chaos Emeralds to the cinema to increase the powers of both Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, now sporting a bigger and better Eggman mustache. The Chaos Emerald is actually stored within the Emerald Master, which is destroyed and then reforged to free the Emeralds, but perhaps the most interesting detail about Chaos Emerald now is the fact that there is no clue as to where they went. Chaos Emeralds fly into the sky after Sonic returns from his transformation, setting up a major makeover for the next film as the mighty emerald may not exist on Earth anymore.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 follow the blue hedgehog on an adventure around the world after Dr. Robotnik Jim Carrey returns to Earth to seek revenge against Sonic (Ben Schwartz). The film also features live-action introductions to popular Sonic characters Tails the Fox (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). Knuckles, initially working with the newly equipped Eggman Carrey, is searching for the Emerald Master, the location of which has been entrusted to Sonic by his late guardian, Longclaw the Owl. Dr. Robotnik betrays Knuckles and seizes Master Emerald for himself to create the giant robot Eggman before he is defeated by the combined efforts of Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic using the powers of Chaos Emeralds.

The loss of Chaos Emeralds makes for a major sequel change as it will force Sonic and his friends out into space. Both of them Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequels are travel films and films set in outer space would be the perfect opportunity to explore the many planets only mentioned or briefly shown. After Sonic the Hedgehog 2Surprising ending, if Sonic goes into space to chase the Chaos Emeralds, it will also be a great place to meet new allies as he takes on Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the hedgehog 2 Shadow is the perfect villain

Sonic’s adventures have taken him from the Green Hills to San Francisco, Siberia and Hawaii. Sonic the Hedgehog 2′The Emerald Master’s message from Longclaw has gone a bit too far and with the military organization Guard of the Nations (GUN) keeping tabs on Sonic and his friends, maybe taking a break from Earth isn’t such a bad idea. The sequel in outer space not only allows the series to visit a number of alien locations such as Sonic’s childhood planet, Tails’ home, or even Robotnik’s mushroom planet, but can also cut the human subplot from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The series’ live-action characters bring a certain charm to the film, most notably James Marsden’s small town cop Tom Wachowski. But Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also have to look for a branch by adding other Sonic mainstays like Amy Rose, Cream the Rabbit, and/or even Rouge the Bat. And while GUNs are currently tolerant of Sonic’s presence on Earth, they may not be hospitable if more unknown anthropomorphic animals take refuge on the planet. Sonic will need more than just Knuckles and Tails if GUN plans to release Shadow.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2The box office success has ensured a third film in the fledgling franchise and even a spin-off series for Knuckles the Echidna. With SEGA’s cinematic universe starting in the works, the Chaos Emeralds location quest could align with the MCU’s Infinity Saga, as similarities between the Emerald Master and Infinity Gauntlet have been drawn. Hopefully, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made the Chaos Emeralds changes good and changed the series for the better.
