Next year’s world triathlon sprint and relay championships will take place in Hamburg, Germany, from July 13-16, 2023.
World Triathlon, the German Triathlon Union (DTU) and the city of Hamburg have agreed on the dates for the four-day event a year before the World Championships. DTU will also work closely with IRONMAN Germany for the World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships.
The sprint and relay championships are a multi-sport program. It includes the World Triathlon Championship Series for elite athletes, as well as Junior World Championships, Age Group Sprint World Championships and Mixed Relay World Championships for Elite, Junior/U23 and Age Group categories.
The 2023 sprint and relay championships are expected to attract around 4,000 international runners, as well as support teams, officials, family and friends from around the world. The first tournament will be held in Montreal (Canada) next June.
Andy Grote, Senator for the Interior and Sports of Hamburg, said: “The ‘Active City’ is Germany’s triathlon. Shocked the sports world in 2002 and set the standard.
“Today, Hamburg is the flagship of the international triathlon world, with the ‘world’s largest triathlon’ and has been the home of the World Triathlon series for many years. The Ironman World Championships are brought to the Hanseatic League City.
“We are very much looking forward to welcoming the best athletes from around the world to a showdown in July 2023 in front of a spectacular downtown backdrop.”
World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado said: “We are very excited to be back in Hamburg for the 2023 sprint and relay championships.
“The Mixed Relay is an event that will forever be associated with the city, we have hosted the World Championships for so many years. It is also an iconic destination for age groups from all over the world.
“So it made a lot of sense to bring them together for one of our most special events: the sprint and relay championships. We’re ready to give fans more opportunities to enjoy their triathlon in Hamburg. Loved it, the centrally located venue is fantastic and the athletes love it. We can’t wait to see more iconic sprint finishes, dives and of course, burger-style beer showers.”
Martin Engelhardt, President of DTU, said: “It is a pleasure that, together with our partners World Triathlon and the City of Hamburg, we are able to set an early date for the highlights of next year’s season.
“This provides everyone involved with the planning necessary to host the iconic triathlon event in the lively city of Hamburg in 2023. I am already looking forward to experiencing a very special atmosphere, thanks to the thousands of people on the pitch. Tens of thousands of viewers, which is unique in the world.
“The world’s best elite athletes, as well as age-group athletes from all over the world, will transform Hamburg into a triathlon mecca and ensure that the exciting competition will be remembered by all.”
At the 2023 World Ironman Sprint and Relay Championships, medals will be awarded in nine events. In addition to elite individual and mixed relay events, athletes in the youth and age groups will compete for world championship medals in individual and relay events.
Athletes in the junior and age groups will compete in individual sprint distances (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), and elites will use a new knockout format. Here, athletes must qualify for the finals in the super sprint distance (300m swim, 7km bike, 1.5km run) through semi-finals or rematches.
