That Sonic Porcupine The franchise has covered many different TV shows and movies, each with a new Sonic design. Although the blue blur has received redesigns throughout the video game series, its appearance in each TV show and movie is even more varied. Since the beginning Sonic the Hedgehog series until now, each design has been interesting and changed the game design in different ways.
Starting with the first game in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog The series follows the titular speedster as he faces various foes. Although the series had humble beginnings, it has now grown into a major multi-media franchise, spanning film, television, comics, toys, and more. With the second live-action film in the franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 2breaking box office records, the Sonic the train seems far from stopped.
From Sonic the Hedgehog . Adventures to newer Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic and friends have used many very different designs. This design has something to do with the latest Sonic games almost all the time. Other times, however, it’s completely original. So here’s an explanation of how each of Sonic’s distinct movies and TV shows looks and personality aligns with its video game counterparts.
Sonic the Hedgehog . Adventures (1993-1996)
Sonic the Hedgehog . Adventures was the first animated series in which Sonic appeared. The event ran from 1993 to 1996, meaning that Sonic only had the first two games to work on. Sonic’s appearance on the show was essentially the same as it looked in game commercials, consisting of simple shapes and pronounced spikes. Even though it looks a bit cheaper than later Sonic design, there is almost no difference in the silhouette of Sonic from this show and Sonic from the first game.
Before Adventure, Sonic’s personality is quite interesting. He is characterized as “very cool,” acts as the epitome of a ’90s one-liner. In the show, Sonic does have a bit of this personality, but he acts more as a Bugs Bunny-type con man. He often uses costumes and jokes to bring down Dr. Robotnik and other baddies, giving the show Saturday morning cartoon feel. Sonic the Hedgehog . Adventures in fact this was the first time one of Sonic’s most famous traits took shape: Sonic’s love of chili dogs.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1993-1994)
Running together Sonic the Hedgehog . Adventures before Sonic the Hedgehogbetter known as Sonic SatAM. satAM focuses more on the story than its sister show, acting as a darker take on Sonic universe. Sonic Design in satAM not much different from him Adventure incarnation. The head is smaller, with more prominent spines, and the mouth is slightly different. Apart from that, the design is basically the same.
Sonic Personality in satAM much closer to the personality depicted in the game. While he’s still a cool comedian, Sonic takes on a slightly more mature personality, as he leads a team of rebels known as the Freedom Fighters. Courageous, heroic and stubborn Sonic, leads his team in the war against Robotnik.
Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie (1996)
Surprisingly, live-action Sonic the Hedgehog not the first Sonic film. Sonic the Hedgehog the Movieas known as Sonic OVA, is an original Japanese video animation released in parts in 1996. Sonic’s design here is quite simple compared to its previous iterations, in terms of looks and personality. By the time it was released, Knuckles had become a prominent character in the game, which is why Sonic teamed up with him and Tails in the film. Other than that, not much has changed in the making of this film.
Sonic Underground (1999)
Sonicthird television show, Sonic Underground, really the series’ first major departure from the game. The main contribution of this show is to give Sonic an origin and family. Drawing from stories Sonic SatAM, Underground follows the younger Sonic and his two siblings as they try to find their mother. Every episode of Sonic Underground has musical numbers performed by three brothers, with Sonic being the lead singer and the laser electric guitar player. Sonic Underground was actually developed as a way to advertise Sega’s Dreamcast console, with later games elevating some elements from the show.
sonic x (2003-2006)
sonic x is the first time the Sonic series has used a modern Sonic design – a design introduced in Sonic Adventure which is still in use today. Sonic looks much more humanoid, with longer legs and a more complex shape. Sonic also often works with other characters from Sonic video game franchises, such as Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, and many more. sonic x also focuses on making Sonic cool both in the universe and to viewers once again, earning the admiration of his many friends as they fight to protect the world and one another. The show reinforces some of the character traits that have existed in the character since his first game appearance, such as Sonic’s fear of water and his desire to be faster than everyone else. sonic x‘s Sonic starts off cocky but actually goes through some character development, as the series actually has a pretty deep overall story. Lots of drawing from Sonic Adventure video games series, this cartoon made the first Sonic in the modern era.
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Many forget that Sonic the Hedgehog actually made a cameo appearance in Disney’s Easter egg-filled Wreck-It Ralph. This is the first time a modern Sonic design has appeared on the big screen, and while it played a minor role, it was a big surprise. Sonic is basically the same here as in the game, with not much of his personality shining through. He’s been treated like a celebrity, and seems to have made Dr. Eggman was tired.
Sonic boom (2014-2017)
Sonic boom is Sonic shows that the most recently ended, spanning two seasons and 104 episodes. Sonic’s designs and personas are taken directly from Sonic boom game, because the show was released to promote the reboot series. Although the design is more detailed, the personality is not. Sonic boom mostly has to do with comedy, which is why Sonic is characterized as impatient and sarcastic, constantly quipping and breaking the fourth wall. While definitely not Sonic’s worst redesign, it differs from previous iterations in several big ways. Aside from the obvious bandages and bandanas, one of the most significant changes to Sonic’s arm. Instead of having the same pale color as his mouth and chest, Sonic has blue furry arms on his Sonic boom, as well as a taller body. While this is one of Sonic’s biggest redesigns, it’s exactly the same as Sonic boom game design, with this it seems to be the path the franchise wants to go.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Sonic Design in Sonic the Hedgehog and sonic the hedgehog 2, the first two live-action films, famous. It started with a pretty gruesome design, the studio was delayed Sonic due to fan requests to revamp, redesign, and completely revive Sonic. Fortunately, this appears to be beneficial in the long run. Sonic the Hedgehog cherry picked out all of the best attributes from the various versions of the character, leading to what some would consider the definitive version of Sonic. Sonic looks like a combination of classic Sonic and modern Sonic designs, maintaining a simple form while still looking like he could exist in the real world. Sonic also doesn’t worry too much about being cool, acting like a fun-loving, full-hearted kid.
Unlike the previous versions, this Sonic departs from several modern games that have been attached to the dashing, cool, and heroic Sonic. However, things like his relationships with other characters and his powers of Chaos Emeralds suggest that, despite his distinct personality, Sonic’s lore is true to the game. Live action Sonic movies do one thing no game has ever dared to do: they break their sights on each other.
The latest version of Sonic is from the new animated Netflix show Prime Sonic. It hasn’t been released yet, so not much is known about his personality. It stays close to modern Sonic designs, except it’s slimmer and more cartoonish. Although this is the latest Sonic design at the moment, Sonic the Hedgehog The series has covered many movies, TV shows, and video games, so this redesign may be far from being the last.
