So let’s say Paramount, Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has crossed $400 million at the global box office. This includes $190.563 million in North America and $209.451 million overseas for Sega’s $110 million video game adaptation. Domestic total over $40 million more than the closest video game-based competitor, $146 million Uncharted ($402 million global) and $148 million Sonic the Hedgehog ($320 million worldwide). Heck, even when adjusted for inflation, that $190.6 million gross is only behind Angelina Jolie grave robber ($131 million in 2001/212 million adjusted) among video game films. And yes, it’s earned $80 million more than its 2020 predecessor globally while getting comparable reviews and buzz to the first film and getting fans really excited for what the three cakes might hold.
“With Sonic the Hedgehog 2our filmmakers and production partners deliver the high-quality theatrical experience the whole family has been waiting for, and we’re thrilled by the enthusiastic global response to the characters and worlds we’ve created from our beloved ones. Sonic IP,” said Marc Weinstock, President, Worldwide Marketing & Distribution, Paramount Pictures.
I might not say that the disclosure of the “Shadow the Hedgehog” credit cookie is equivalent to Batman handing over the Joker card at the end Batman begins, but my son may not agree with that assessment. The film retains the gee-whiz sensibilities of its predecessor, existing as the first high-quality, child-targeted adventure fantasy and a second nostalgic IP adaptation. That the film includes a lengthy comic subplot for Rachel played by Natasha Rothwell, briefly allowing Rachel and her sister (Tika Sumpter) to team up and outwit the clumsy cop, shows that all parties understand why the first picture worked. It’s not just a general idea about Sonic film, but certain elements in certain films (including Jim Carrey will completelyCable Builder as Doctor Robotnik) providing entertainment for fans and the general public.
However, this marks the eighth film (including China Battle at Changjin Lake 2) to cross $400 million worldwide and Paramount’s second title alongside Best Weapon: Maverick ($480 million domestically and about $912 million (has crossed the $911 million Korean war epic) in China. This is the 23rd film since Covid began reaching that milestone, joining the two. Battle at Changjin Lake movies, japan Demon Slayer MovieChina Hi, Ma’am, Detective Chinatown 3, Eight Hundred and My people, my homeland. Among Hollywood films, he joined the WB Godzilla vs. Kong, Dune, Batman and Fantastic Beasts 3Sony Venom 2, Spider-Man: No Way Home and UnchartedDisney’s Shang-Chi, Eternals and Doctor Strange 2thorough F9, No Time to Die, Sing 2 and Jurassic World 3 and Paramount Best Weapon: Maverick.
“This milestone demonstrates that audiences are hungry for great family entertainment, and when we deliver a world-class franchise that lasts, audiences are in theaters. We can’t wait to expand Sonic the universe further and bring more compelling stories to fans with the next installment of the film and the forthcoming Paramount+ series.” said Daria Cercek, Co-President, Paramount Motion Picture Group.
The list (non-Chinese titles) includes two animated films, six comic book superhero films, three fantasy sequels, one fantasy starter and four “non-fantasy” action films. Disney’s Covid-era success has been based entirely on MCU films, which is conversation for another post, but 16 Hollywood films are split between the five major studios. And, yes, if we think of the 20th Century as its own studio, then Avatar: Water Way going to make it six before the year ends. Lionsgate is mostly taking time off this year. Hopefully so John Wick 4 be their first non-Hunger Games/Late afternoon $400 million more gross next year.
For a sub-genre that’s supposedly been “cursed” for 29 years, we’ve got two video game-based movies rank among the year’s biggest. sonic 2 joins Tom Holland’s Uncharted ($402 million)rampage ($430 million), Detective Pikachu ($430 million) and warship ($438 million) among the highest-grossing video game films ever, even if Detective Pikachu maybe one-and-done and warship (which cost $165 million and made half of its money from China amidst a very congested journey). Uncharted will likely get a sequel, and sonic 3 should be pretty high up on Paramount’s priority list, though Dwayne Johnson’s monster monster (still my pick for best video game movie ever) seems envisioned as one-and-done. We’ll see if Illumination is animated Super Mario Bros. could be the first to crack $450 million early next year.
