Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings more of the franchise knowledge Sega has built over the years; not only in the form of Blue Blur’s friend Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) and knuckles (Idris Elba), but the Emerald Master who served as the driving force behind some Sonic game. With Knuckles’ third film and spin-off already green, the question among fans naturally becomes what other elements of the game will be included in future live-action material. And if you saw the post-credits scene of the film, you already know that a third film will bring in one of the franchise’s biggest players.
After Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails defeat Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the military cleans up after the battle when GUN commander Walters (Tom Butler) is alerted to a research facility housing a decades-old project. The camera cuts to the facility, where the test subject—Shadow the Hedgehog—is located. The film ends when Shadow wakes up and opens his red, energized eyes. Introduced in 2001 sonic adventure 2, Shadow is considered to be one of Sonic’s greatest rivals and shares many of the same traits. But he was designed to become a “Supreme Life Form” to protect humanity, and his methods often put him at odds with Sonic and his friends. He became a fan favorite, and at one point even became the title of his own slightly cult classic and has a killer opening song.
In a recent interview on the Green Hill Zone podcast, film co-writer Pat Casey talked about what to expect from Shadow when he shows up to make trouble for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the next film. When asked, Casey admitted that the main reason he became a post-credits actor was mainly because of his popularity, and also because of what he could bring to the future films. Casey described it as “driven by anger and revenge,” similar to Knuckles, but the main difference is that Shadow isn’t as misunderstood as the red echidna in its sequel. Shadow was created with the sole purpose of protecting the world from harm, but it’s the way he does it that will put him at odds with Sonic and his friends.
Casey also teases that Sonic’s attempts to connect with Shadow won’t be as easy as with Tails and Knuckles. “Sonic has never had to deal with someone as emotionally damaged as Shadow…when he saw Shadow he was like, ‘Well, I’ll teach him about the power of friendship, like with Knuckles!’ But it won’t work in Shadow. For fans of the franchise, this is an interesting thing to say, considering Shadow’s desire to protect humanity stems from witnessing the death of his friend Maria at the hands of GUN. sonic 2 explaining that GUN will be a problem going forward, sounds like a bit a darker sequel is on the cards for Blue Blur and company.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is in the cinema.
