‘Toxic Avenger’ actor Ron Fazio says cult movie deserves a reboot

CANTON – Ron Fazio recalled trying to convince a video store employee that he had played the lead role in the “Toxic Avenger” sequel in the 1980s.

Fazio’s sister was there and even vouched for it.

“I don’t know if it’s Blockbuster,” he said. “I can’t remember the name (of the video shop). But my sister was proud that I did (the movie). And I said, ‘Hey, let’s see if they have ‘Toxic Avenger’… find it.

“My sister said (to the workers), ‘This is my brother, there he is here (in the box)’ And they said, ‘No way!'”

Showing his driver’s license, Fazio left with the employee who was still hesitating.

“But it’s like there’s no photo of me,” he said describing the role of the mutant superhero in full mask. “It was just a picture of ‘Toxic Avenger’ on the box, and no way to convince anyone, and this was in South Jersey at the time (and the film was based in New Jersey).”

Reflecting on such encounters, 59-year-old Fazio says making films is fun, “and I did it, and I know I did it.”

‘Toxie’ visits a toy shop in downtown Canton

Fazio will be available to share more of his “Toxic Avenger” days with film fans when he appears from 3 to 6 pm Saturday at the Happy Pappys Action Figure Extravaganza, 135 Sixth St. NW, in downtown Canton.

Fazio will sign autographs for $20, with the opportunity to take photos and ask him questions.

Fazio played “Toxie” in “The Toxic Avenger Part II” and “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie.”

“‘Toxic Avenger’ and ‘Basket Case’ have always been (some of) my favorite B horror movies,” said Clifton Boggs, owner of Happy Pappys. “As a child, my mother used to take me to Camelot music at Mellett Mall.

“I had to rent three to five horror films for the weekend,” he recalls. “Gosh, did I miss that movie marathon. So that’s one of the many reasons to take Ron Fazio to the store and share his love for playing Toxie.”
