Watch out for street closures and bus detours for the Cactus Man Triathlon on May 1st in Tempe

The city of Tempe will see changes to transportation services and road closures and restrictions on May 1 due to the Cactus Man Triathlon.

Here are the expected changes, according to the City of Tempe:

Transit Service Options

  • Avoid traffic and parking hassles with transportation to and from downtown Tempe. Tempe has 13 local bus routes, 6 free rail loop stops and 9 light rail stops. Passengers are encouraged to park and ride the light rail at one of the following park and ride locations:

    • dorsey and apache
    • McClintock and Apache
    • Price and Apache

Street closures and restrictions

The best way to attend the event is to use Priest Drive or Rural Road for North/South access and University Drive or McDowell Road for East/West access. From University Drive, access to the city centre car park. The following street restrictions and closures have been identified; however, additional measures may be taken to address public safety concerns that occur during the event.

The following streets will be restricted or closed on Sunday, May 1 from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • Ash Avenue between the American Airlines parking lot (just north of 3rd Street) and Rio Salado Parkway is closed.Maintenance access car park
  • Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway between Priest and Hardy lanes is limited to one lane
  • The Rio Salado Parkway Eastbound between Hardy Drive and Mill Avenue is closed
  • Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway is between Mill Avenue and Rural Road, one lane only. Note: All northbound vehicles crossing streets and lanes are required to turn right (east).No left turns or passes are allowed on this section of Rio Salado Parkway
  • Westbound Rio Salado Parkway between Rural Road and Mill Avenue, one lane only
  • Westbound Rio Salado Parkway is closed at Mill Avenue.All westbound traffic must turn right onto North Mill Avenue
  • The Rio Salado Parkway Westbound between Mill Avenue and Priest Drive is closed
  • Southbound Mill Avenue is between Rolling Hills Golf Course and Washington Street/Curry Road, one lane only.All southbound traffic must turn right onto westbound Washington Street
  • Southbound Mill Avenue between Washington Street/Curry Road and 2nd Street is closed
  • One lane only on Northbound Mill Avenue between Rio Salado Parkway and Washington Street/Curry Road
  • Northbound Mill Avenue at Rio Salado Parkway is closed. All northbound traffic must turn right onto the eastbound Rio Salado Parkway
  • Westbound Curry Road on College Avenue is closed.All westbound traffic must turn onto College Avenue
  • Eastbound Curry Road between Mill and College Avenues is limited to one lane
  • Southbound College Avenue between McKellips and Curry Roads is closed
  • Northbound Hardy Drive between First Street and Rio Salado Parkway is closed.Access to the Tempe Arts Center will be granted on a limited basis
  • One lane only on Northbound Priest Drive between Rio Salado Parkway and Washington Street
  • Eastbound Washington Street between Priest Drive and Mill Avenue is closed. All eastbound traffic must turn to Priest Drive.Access to the “The Lofts” apartment complex will be granted on a limited basis and can only be accessed by making a U-turn on Washington Street westbound to Washington Street eastbound on the Center Parkway
  • The Southbound Centre Parkway between Washington Street and the westbound SR202 exit ramp is closed
  • All vehicles leaving SR202 eastbound on Priest Drive will need to turn southbound onto Priest Drive
  • All vehicles leaving SR202 westbound at Centre Parkway/Priest Drive must turn north onto Centre Parkway and then detour onto Washington Street westbound
  • There will be no access to the SR202 eastbound ramp from Priest Drive or Centre Parkway

The following bus routes will be in effect on Sunday, May 1 from the start of service until 2pm:

  • 48 Northbound: Regular route to Rio Salado Pkwy./Priest Dr. South via Priest Dr. to University Dr., E University Dr. to Ash Ave., N Ash Ave to 5th St., E 5th St. to Tempe Transit Center, east to 5th St./Veterans Way to 6th St., east to 6th St., to Rural Rd., north to Rural Rd.To Rio Salado Pkwy., east of Rio Salado Pkwy, resume normal route
  • 48 Southbound: Regular route to Rio Salado Pkwy./Rural Rd., south of Rural Rd. To 6th St., west to 6th St., to Veterans Way, west to Veterans Way/5th St. to Tempe Transportation Center., west to 5th St. to Ash Ave., south to Ash Ave., to University Dr., West on University Dr. to Priest Dr., North on Priest Dr. to Rio Salado Pkwy. West on Rio Salado Pkwy.return to normal route
  • 62 Northbound: Regular route to Hardy Dr./University Dr., east of University Dr. to Ash Ave., north of Ash Ave. to 5th St., resume regular route east of 5th St.
  • 62 Southbound: Regular route to 5th St./Ash Ave., south of Ash Ave. to University Dr., west of University Dr. to Hardy Dr., south of Hardy Dr., resume regular route
  • Orbiting Earth Eastbound: From Tempe Transit Center; East on 5th St/Veterans Way to 6th St., Northeast on 6th St., to Rural Rd., North on Rural Rd.Return to normal route to Rio Salado Pkwy.
  • Orbit Earth Westbound: Regular route to Scottsdale Rd./Weber Rd., south of Scottsdale Rd.To 6th St., go west on 6th St. to Veterans Way; NW on Veterans Way/5th St. to Tempe Transit Center
